Membership,
This is your District Director here offering you a fall greeting and hello. I have been busy here lately, getting married and going on honeymoons and such things! I hope that everybody out there is doing well and I apologize for not posting much to the membership since I was appointed to be District 6 Director. Needless to say I am here and if any of you folks out there need me please don’t hesitate to call, e-mail, or write me. Trapping season is only about 25 days away and I am sure that folks have been getting supplies in order. I have been slow this year to get my trapping supplies together with lots of other things going on in my life. I am quickly trying to get the rest of my traps boiled and waxed and disposable stakes made! I have been seeing quite a bit of fur activity in my travels. Fox and coyote tracks are plentiful and judging by the number of raccoons killed on the sides of the roads it should be a good year for ringtails! With plenty of water this past spring and summer I think that our aquatic furbearers should have had a good rearing season. I have been seeing quite a bit of beaver activity here lately as the weather cools and the beavers try to pack on the winter fat. With fur prices down this year I am not sure how many trappers are going to hit the woods and waters in pursuit of furbearers? I plan to do quite a bit of trapping as my work schedule permits but I am thinking that my lines may be cut back slightly from last years. I know that very few of us trap for a living but the basic finances involved in running a recreational trapline still come into play for me and low fur prices do not help the equation. I have been talking lately with Norman Pierce down in Brunswick Co. and he is organizing a trapper training around the New Year with a group of boy scouts in Greensville Co. I plan on being there to help and if anybody else would like to help us out please let me or Norman know. I would like to see a basic trapper’s education class be put on in District 6 sometime this coming year. Please let me know if you would be interested in helping with an organized event such as this. Also please let me know if there is any interest in having a District 6 meeting this fall. I know most of us just join the VTA to give our money and show our support for the pastime that we love so dearly, but if there is any interest in becoming a more organized group within District 6 please let me know. I know that a lot of other districts around the state have quarterly meetings and gatherings and I think that would be nice for us to hold similar meetings during the year as well. Please feel free to contact me at any of the below methods. Until next time, take care and happy trapping. Best,
